Tax relief disaster — Extended deadlines

The IRS has extended tax deadlines for individuals and businesses in federally declared disaster areas.

If you’ve been affected by recent disasters, here’s what you need to know about extended filing dates, automatic relief, and penalty abatement.

Extended tax deadlines — Which locations qualify

To support recovery efforts, the IRS has announced deadline extensions for those in disaster-affected areas. These extensions allow affected taxpayers more time to file their federal tax returns and make payments without incurring penalties.

California wildfires

  • Taxpayers in Los Angeles County and other impacted areas have until October 15, 2025, to file their federal tax returns and make any required tax payments.

Other affected states

The following states have been granted extended deadlines to file 2024 tax returns and make payments:

  • Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alaska, New Mexico, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia
  • Deadline: May 1, 2025

Automatic tax relief — Who qualifies

You may qualify for automatic tax relief if:

  • Your IRS address of record is in one of the federally declared disaster areas, you automatically qualify for extended deadlines.
  • You live or operate a business in a disaster zone but aren’t automatically recognized, you may need to contact the IRS to request relief.

Payroll & excise tax penalty abatement

Penalties for failing to make payroll and excise tax deposits will be waived if deposits were made by January 22, 2025.
